Take Your Child to the Library… the Rowayton Library… This Saturday from 10am – 5pm
The Rowayton Library will be participating in Take Your Child To The Library Day on Saturday, February 2, along with 120 libraries in 12 states... with special activities for families. This Saturday, the Rowayton Library will be open ALL DAY from 10am - 5pm with events planned throughout the day.  Kids (and adults) - come take a walk on the "wild side" with a journey into Africa,  your passport is your library card (or if you don't have one, you can get one).     

At 11am, our journey through Sub Saharan Africa begins (a visual tour for kids): the beauty of this region is that it has EVERYTHING: the wild jungles of the Congo to the oldest desert in the world in Namibia to the teeming wildlife of Botswana and the majesty of one of the 7 great natural wonders of the world, Victoria Falls.  Learn about the different animals and their environments in each.  Presenter:  Darren Humphreys is Founder & CEO of Travel Sommelier, a specialist travel company that focuses on travel to Africa. He grew up in South Africa and has had the privilege of traveling extensively throughout Sub-Sharan Africa to some of the most iconic destinations in the world. He is delighted to be able to share that passion and knowledge with our next generation of explorers.

Surrounding the day...Jungle stories at 10:30, our video safari and craft at 11.  Build a Lego Jungle at 12:30; and ongoing.... On Tuesday, January 22, at noon, the Rowayton Library held his year’s Annual Fund campaign drawing for a handmade quilt or a handmade rug.

Art21: Humor - A Film/Discussion Lunch



Over the past decade, Art21 has established itself as the preeminent chronicler of contemporary art and artists through its Peabody Award-winning biennial television series, "Art in the Twenty-First Century." 

The nonprofit organization has used the power of digital media to introduce millions of people of all ages to contemporary art and artists and has created a new paradigm for teaching and learning about the creative process.   

Join us for a "brown bag" lunch, refreshments, a movie, craft and discussion... for adults interested in Art.  Co-sponsored by the Rowayton Arts Center.   


Art21 Film - Humor:  How do artists use irony, goofiness, satire, and sarcasm in their work? Can an artwork be funny and critical at the same time? Do contemporary artists always take themselves seriously? The "Art in the Twenty-First Century" documentary “Humor” explores these questions through the work of Charles Atlas, Eleanor Antin, Raymond Pettibon, Elizabeth Murray, and Walton Ford.


Business & Bagels: Technolog Trends that are Changing Small Business


Join us at the Rowayton Library for Business & Bagels on Thursday morning, January 24 @ 7:30 am for our quarterly business workshop.   

This session will present an up-to-the-minute look at technology trends that are changing small business. Our presenter, Linda Kuppersmith, president and owner of CMIT Solutions of Stamford, will cover technology change that is dynamic and how much of this new technology is ripe for use by Small Businesses.  

Find out what trends are those that can give you powerful decision making input and help you make the right long-term purchases and decisions for your business.  Learn what technology trends are affecting small business now.  Hear how these will impact your business.  Find out what to do to reduce expenses and increase profits.   

Presenter:  Linda Kuppersmith has over 20 years of technology experience across many industries and company maturities. Her background includes managing technology teams for large Fortune 100 companies and small businesses.  Her company, CMIT Solutions, helps small business owners leverage computers and technology so that they can grow.  She leads an internal mastermind group, is a contributor to a national blog and is co-author of the book "I Just Want My Computer To Work".  This program is co-sponsored by Fairfield County SCORE.  Bagels and coffee are served.

Quilt/Rug Drawing to benefit the Rowayton Library's Annual Fund



On Tuesday, January 22, at noon, the Rowayton Library with be holding this year’s Annual Fund campaign drawing for a handmade quilt or a handmade rug.   

If you would like to be entered into the drawing for this beautiful quilt or rug, no donation is required – the Annual Fund Campaign envelope can be your entry form and are available at the Rowayton Library.   The winning names (one for the quilt and one for the rug) will be drawn by the Goodwives Quilters. 

Light refreshments will be served. Please support your Rowayton Library this year with a gift during the Annual Fund Campaign.

Movie... BookTalk... and it's all a "Secret Life of Bees"



Everyone has either read the book and/or seen the movie of this bestseller “The Secret Life of Bees” – or maybe not.  Here is your chance.  

On Tuesday, January 15 @ 11 am, the Rowayton Library will be showing the movie “The Secret Life of Bees.”   

And, on Tuesday, January 22, at 11:30 am, the Library will be hosting a booktalk on “The Secret Life of Bees” with discussion leader Diana Loevy.   

Bring your own brown bag lunch and join us for the movie on the 15th and 22th with dessert and coffee served.  Multiple copies of the book are available at the Rowayton Library.  These programs are free and open to the public.  This program is brought to you -- in part -- through a grant from the Rowayton Civic Association and the Goodwives Quilters.

Fairy Yarn Mothers... Knitting for Kids



The Rowayton Library will hold its Fairy Yarn Mother’s program for young knitters… on Thursday, January 10 @ 3:30pm with NancyJo Rambusch for kids ages 8 & UP. 

This program is designed to help kid knitters of all skill levels work on their projects. As space is limited, please make a reservation. Bring your own needles and projects. First time students to our knitting program will be provided with a pair of knitting needles and yarn to start learning or working on a project.

Tickets are going on sale on Sunday, January 13 online at dwc.rowayton.org for the Library’s 3rd Annual fundraiser “Dinner with Character(s)” - a Literary Masquerade to benefit the Library.   
The Gala will be held on Saturday, February 9, 2013.  The evening begins at 6:30 p.m. in the homes of our Dinner with Character(s) hosts, who create settings and food befitting their respective novels or movies.  Your "role" as dinner guest is inspired by the book/movie as well -- let its theme, characters and setting be your guide!  (Dress in novel or festive attire.)  At 8:30 p.m. everyone is transported from their host homes for the Gala - featuring live music, dessert, and dancing at the Rowayton Library.

Take a Practice SAT/ACT... FREE



High School kids are invited to take a free practice SAT/ACT test hosted by Kaplan Test Prep and Admissions at the Rowayton Library on Saturday, January 12 @ 10:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. 


Kaplan will proctor this simulated examination for students to learn what they can expect on the college admission tests. This three and a half hour practice test will familiarize you with the English, Math, Reading and Science Reasoning parts of the ACT as well as the new areas in the SAT. There is a short snack break half way through the exam. 


Students must pre-register for this test online at testprep.rowayton.org or by calling the Library at 203-838-5038 prior to the practice test date. Space is limited. Those taking the test must also bring two #2 sharpened pencils and a calculator to the exam. Test results will be returned to the students in the weeks following the practice exam.  Register today.  Space is limited.

Great Decisions Discussion Group Begins...

Great Decisions Discussion Group Begins Wednesday, January 23 @ 7pm

The Rowayton Library is pleased to announce that we will be hosting a Great Decisions Discussion Group which will meet on eight Wednesday evenings beginning January 23 at 7 pm.

Developed by the Foreign Policy Association, the Great Decisions Discussion Program is the oldest and largest grass-roots world affairs education program of its kind in the country. The Great Decisions Discussion Program is FPA's public education initiative to create more informed and engaged citizens by bringing people together to discuss U.S. foreign policy and global affairs issues.

The session topics include: Future of the euro, Egypt, NATO, Myanmar and Southeast Asia, Intervention, Iran, China in Africa, and Threat Assessment. 

Materials are provided to participants and are available at the Rowayton Library. This program is free and open to the public. It will meet for 8 sessions led by Erik Rambusch, Adjunct Professor at Norwalk Community College. Discussion dates are 1/23, 2/6, 2/20, 3/6, 3/20, 4/3, 4/17, and 5/1. Sign Up for World Book Night


Your Rowayton Library is a host site for World Book Night


Volunteer to be a “book giver” on World Book Night U.S – April 23, 2013. It’s free (and so are the books).

On World Book Night 2013, 25,000 “book givers” will each give away 20 copies of a specially-printed, not-for-resale WorldBookNight edition of a book they have read and loved (from this year’s WBN list, selected by librarians and booksellers) to complete strangers – people who may never have owned a book of their own. Book givers receive 20 free paperback copies of one World Book Night title, not too many to carry but enough to share with a good number of potential new readers.

You can participate in WBN 2013 by applying to become a Book Giver. If you are interested in applying to be a Book Giver (the Rowayton Library will be the distribution site for the books), please visit WBN.rowyaton.org. The deadline to apply to be a book giver is January 23, 2013.



LegoTime... first Saturdays... for Kids



Explore the world of building with Legos® for Kids ages 6 and up @ the Rowayton Library on the first Saturday of each month beginning January 6 from noon-3pm.   


This program is a Lego® building/creations workshop where children can work alone or in teams and build a creation based on their imagination and the "Theme of the Month." This is an open session (from noon to 3pm) where your child can build for a few minutes to a few hours.  When your child is done building, we will take a picture of their creation for "the Archives."  Then, please dismantle the creation and put the bricks back in the storage bins. 


The Lego® bricks are the property of the Rowayton Library and will not be distributed at the end of the program. This program is free and open to the public.  Snack will be served.  Parents or caregivers are required to stay in the library during the event for participants under the age of 8.
