Preview Screenings of Art 21 – Season 7
Mondays from noon to 1:30 p.m. (four-week series)
In cooperation with the Rowayton Arts Center
Since 2001, Art21 has established itself as the preeminent chronicler of contemporary art and artists through its Peabody Award-winning biennial PBS seires, “Art in the Twenty-First Century.” The nonprofit organization has used the power of digital media to introduce millions of people of all ages to contemporary art and artists and has created a new paradigm for teaching and learning about the creative process.

INVESTIGATION – Monday, October 20
How do artists push beyond what they already know and readily see? Can acts of engagement and explorations be works of art in themselves? In this episode, artisits use their practices as tools for personal and intellectual discovery, simultaneously documenting and producing new realities in the process. Viewers encounter the artists—Thomas Hirschhorn, Graciela Iturbide and Leonardo Drew—creating their works and speaking in their own words.

SECRETS – Monday, October 27
How do artists make the invisible visible? What hidden elements persist in their work? Is it the artist’s role to reveal them, or not? In this episode, artists share some of the secrets that are intrinsic to their work. Viewers will meet artists Elliott Hundley, Arlene Shechet and Trevor Paglen and get the opportunity to understand their process.

LEGACY – Monday, November 3
Why do we break with some traditions and perpetuate others? Artists in this episode use life experiences and family heritage to explore new aesthetic terrain. Viewers encounter artists—Tania Bruguera, Abraham Cruzvillegas and Wolfgang Laib—creating their works and speaking in their own voices.

FICTION – Monday, November 10
What makes a compelling story? How do artists disrupt everyday reality in the service of revealing subtler truths? This episode features artists who explore the virtues of ambiguity, mix genres and merge aesthetic disciplines to discern not simply what stories mean, but how and why they come to have meaning. Viewers are introduced to Katharina Grosse, Joan Jonas and Omar Fast by getting a look into their works and hearing them speak about their creative process.
