AuthorTalk with Bob Spitz and his new biography on Julia Child… Dearie

On Friday evening, December 7 at 7 pm, New York Times bestselling author Bob Spitz will entertain the Rowayton community with excerpts from his latest book DEARIE: The Remarkable Life of Julia Child.
It’s rare for someone to emerge in America who can change our attitudes, our beliefs, and our very culture. It’s even rarer when that someone is a middle-aged, six-foot three-inch woman whose first exposure to an unsuspecting public is cooking an omelet on a hot plate on a local TV station.  And yet, that’s exactly what Julia Child did.  The warble-voiced doyenne of television cookery became an iconic cult figure and joyous rule-breaker as she touched off the food revolution that has gripped America for more than fifty years.  Now, in Bob Spitz’s definitive, wonderfully affectionate biography, the Julia we know and love comes vividly — and surprisingly — to life.

In Dearie, Spitz employs the same skill he brought to his best-selling, critically acclaimed book The Beatles, providing a clear-eyed portrait of one of the most fascinating and influential Americans of our time — a woman known to all, yet known by only a few.  Bob Spitz is the award-winning author of The Beatles, a New York Times best seller, as well as seven other nonfiction books and a screenplay. He has represented Bruce Springsteen and Elton John in several capacities. His articles appear regularly in magazines and newspapers, including The New York Times Magazine; The Washington Post; Rolling Stone; and O, The Oprah Magazine, among others.   Barrett Books will be on site if you wish to purchase a signed copy.  And, in Rowayton Library’s famous tradition, delicious delicacies from Julia’s recipes will be on hand to “sample”.  The Rowayton Library, 33 Highland Avenue.  This program is free and open to the public.

The Rowayton Post Office is now accepting letters addressed to Santa Claus.  A special mailbox has been installed inside the post office on Rowayton Avenue just for those special delivery letters.  Even though Santa is extremely busy at the North Pole, making sure all the presents are ready and wrapped for Christmas Eve, it’s a very exciting time for all; Rudolph and Santa can’t wait to come to Rowayton. Rudolph is especially looking forward to eating the carrots you kindly leave and maybe a cookie for Santa.  To ensure Santa receives your letter on time, please place them in this special mailbox or mail them to:

Rowayton Holiday Shopping in Support of Local Non-Profits

If you are looking for “Rowayton” gifts for this holiday season, the Rowayton Library is a great place to find… Rowayton postcards, calendars, books and DVDs on Rowayton history, Rowayton Library umbrellas and mugs, books and music CDs by Rowaytonites, a wonderful jigsaw puzzle of Jim Flora’s Map of Rowayton, and much, much more.  And all purchases benefit local non-profits (Rowayton Historical Society, the Rowayton Civic Association, the Rowayton Gardeners, and your Rowayton Library).

Choosing the Idea(l) gift...

It's amazing how many gifts I want to purchase... this one is just right for mom, or best friend, or son, or aunt. But then I have to decide which is the best model of that gift, the best bang for the dollar, the one that will last, the one that everyone is raving about. Of course I can read the reviews online from this blog or store, but can I really be sure.

My librarian training sends me right to the library... but who has time to go to the library while shopping? So many libraries now offer Consumer Reports online to their patrons and all you need is access to the Internet (which everyone has) and a library card (which everyone SHOULD!) Because we all believe in CONSUMER REPORTS and we all SHOULD believe in libraries... and they are both FREE at most libraries.

For Rowayton Library users, go to http://consumer.rowayton.org, put in your library card and off you go... making informed decisions... on the go.
