MusicTime with Dre Towey - Wednesday, March 20 @ 10:30am

Jump right into Spring… on Wednesday morning, the first day of spring - March 20 at 10:30am with the music and stories of Dre Towey… at the Rowayton Library.  Local music artist and two time recipient of the Parent’s Choice Award, Dre Towey will sing our favorite springtime songs "Grow", "Apple Tree",  "Little Raindrop" and "Mr. Golden Sun… just to name a few.   For more details about Dre visit www.jamsono.com.  This program is for children and adults and is free and open to the public.

If your child is interested in delving deeper into gardening, the Rowayton Library is proud to host a Junior Master Gardener program. 

Meetings will occur on Wednesdays for April  and May.    

  

We will be following the text Literature in the Garden.  There is also a required community service requirement.

This is an accredited program, therefore attendance is mandatory.

The eight sessions will include topics such as:

Soil

Botany

Garden safety rules

Recycling and the Environment

The food web

Cultivation

Upon completing all topics children will be eligible for a certificate in Literature in the Garden.

Due to the technical nature of the program, it is recommended for children in grades 3 and above. 

Classes will meet on the following days at 3:30pm at the Rowayton Library:

April 3rd, 10th and 24th

May 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd & 29th.

The program is offered free of charge. In order to offer this program, we need a minimum of eight children, but there is room for up to twelve students. Registration is on a first come, first served basis. Wednesday, March 20 @ 7pm – Great Decisions - Intervention

The next meeting of the Foreign Policy Association’s Great Decisions Group is Wednesday, March 20 @ 7pm @ the Rowayton Library.  Topic:  Intervention:  The “responsibility to protect” doctrine has become central to modern humanitarian intervention. When should the international community intervene? Why did the West rush to intervene in Libya but not Syria?  The Rowayton Library’s Great Decisions Discussion Group meets on alternating Wednesday evenings. Developed by the Foreign Policy Association, the Great Decisions Discussion Program is the oldest and largest grass-roots world affairs education program of its kind in the country. The Great Decisions Discussion Program is FPA's public education initiative to create more informed and engaged citizens by bringing people together to discuss U.S. foreign policy and global affairs issues. The session topics include:  Iran, China in Africa, and Threat Assessment. Materials are provided to participants and are available at the Rowayton Library. This program is free and open to the public. The sessions are led by Erik Rambusch, Adjunct Professor at Norwalk Community College.  Discussion dates are 4/3, 4/17, and 5/1. Eighth Annual Haiku Contest Begins March 15-April 15

          The Eighth Annual Haiku Contest at the Rowayton Library is running now through April 15^th to help Celebrate "April as Poetry Month."  You are invited to participate in this annual tradition here in Rowayton.  The winners will be invited to read their winning Haiku at The Rowayton Library at a reception on May 5^th  as well as have their Haiku published in the library’s monthly newsletter and on their website.

The definition for Haiku for this contest is as follows:

• An original poem of 17 syllables in 3 lines written in the format of
• line 1 in 5 syllables, 
• line 2 in 7 syllables, and 
• line 3 in 5 syllables;
• Depicting a season;
• Describing an event of nature;
• Without violence.

Each Haiku must be submitted on a separate sheet of paper and must contain the author's name, address, and telephone number on the reverse side of the poem. Each Haiku submitted must be accompanied by a self-addressed stamped envelope.

The contest will end on April 15^th. All winners will be notified by telephone and snailmail.  Participants will receive a Rowayton Library pencil.  P.S. Pi(e) Day – March 14

Celebrate Pi Day on March 14 at the Rowayton Library! Help us celebrate this never-ending number (3.14159 . . .) and Einstein's birthday as well. On March 14 participate in pi-related activities (take-home work-sheets and quizes) and enjoy a piece of pie… all day long (while the pi(e) lasts!
